New Porsche GT3RS coming soon

Post  dt_insane on Sat Aug 22, 2009 7:40 pm

Caption: The real deal - The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a genuine homologation special - it's the car on which the racing version of the GT3 will be based.

When Porsche builds a homologation special it's very special indeed – say hello to the 2009 GT3 RS, Porsche's hottest 911 yet. This is the car on which the racing version of the GT3 will be based, with more power, less weight, shorter gearing and race-tuned suspension. It's the latest in a long line of uncompromisingly track-orientated, barely street-legal 911 RS specials, going back to the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7.

The GT3 RS engine is based on the proven flat-six cylinder "boxer" engine of the GT3. As in the GT3, it's been bored out from 3.6 to 3.8 litres but it's even more radically tuned, kicking out a claimed 332kW compared to the GT3's 320 – and 25kW more than the previous, 3.6-litre RTS. The new RS is only available with a six-speed manual gearbox, modified with shorter gearing and a shorter lever throw than the GT3 'box for lightning shifts and phenomenal acceleration out of corners at the expense of some top speed. Its track is wider than that of the GT3 – not only at the rear but also on the front wheels, so it has wheel-arch extensions on the front wings over 19" 245/35 front tyres, with 325/30 gumballs at the rear.

It's also the first RS with Porsche's active suspension management, specially set-up for track use, and uses much the same technology on its active engine mounts, to reduce the movement of the engine and gearbox in the body shell under racing conditions. The aerodynamics of the RS have been optimised for maximum downforce rather than top speed, including an extra-large, carbon-fibre rear wing with special aluminium supports, lowered ride height and special front and rear bumpers Customers can also order a lithium-ion racing battery that's 10kg lighter than the standard lead-acid one. The loud go-fast stripes are standard, as is an authoritative all-titanium exhaust system. The 911 GT3 RS will go on sale worldwide in the first quarter of 2010 with prices starting at €118 000 (about R1.4-million).
